As a constituent and local business operator, I am writing to ask for your support for the road haulage industry ahead of the Autumn Budget. I own / work for COMPANY NAME employing XX people in your constituency. Road transport businesses like ours keep local supply chains moving and are essential to delivering the Government’s ambition for growth in every postcode. However, operators across the road haulage, coach and van sectors are under severe pressure. The Iran conflict and resulting volatility in fuel prices have hit road transport harder than almost any other sector because of our direct exposure to diesel costs, which are accelerating to record highs. Hauliers are operating on margins of around 2%, while coach operators and van businesses are also struggling with rising fuel, employment, insurance and regulatory costs. Despite these pressures, the Government is planning three fuel duty increases in the first four months of 2027: 3p per litre in January, 2p in March and a further RPI-linked increase in April. For businesses already facing exceptional cost pressures, this is unsustainable. Higher fuel duty would not only hit operators; these costs would feed through supply chains, local businesses and the visitor economy, ultimately increasing prices for consumers. I am therefore asking you to write to the Chancellor ahead of the Budget and support the RHA’s call to cancel the planned triple tax rise whammy scheduled for next year. The RHA’s policy team would be very happy to support you in writing to Ministers or drafting and tabling Parliamentary Questions on fuel duty and the pressures facing haulage, coach and van operators.
